Tyler Sharpe and Ben Fuqua are the co-leaders heading into the final day of play at the AT&T Kentucky Amateur Golf Championship at the Country Club of Paducah. Both are tied at 140, and veteran Jimmy Brown of Paducah is 3 back at 143, with Rick Cochran and Matt Gann in striking distance at 144. Seven others are tied with 145's.
Former Murray State right hander Mike Perconte signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. He is scheduled to report to Arizona today. Perconte (Lisle, Ill.) was one of the most consistent pitchers on the ‘Breds 2008 roster as he finished the season with a 4-5 record and a 4.12 ERA. He was second on the team with four complete games and tied for the team lead with 67 strikeouts. Being around professional baseball is nothing new to Mike. His father, Jack, was a 16th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1978 Major League Baseball Draft after playing collegiately at MSU. He went on to play eight seasons in the majors with the Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox.
The KHSAA State Baseball Tournament gets underway today at Applebee's Park in Lexington. In the opener today, Christian Academy plays Apollo, followed by Greenup County and Lawrence County. Tonight, its Harrison County battling Lexington Catholic, followed by Christian County and PRP. The Tournament continues through Saturday.
